On October 07, 2025, at approximately 5:07 a.m., the Butte County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) received a 911 call from a citizen at the Feather River near the intersection of Hutchins Drive and East Gridley Road. The caller reported that a friend had fallen into the river.
BCSO deputies, BCSO Search and Rescue personnel, and Cal-Fire personnel immediately responded and initiated a search for the individual, identified as Chansamay Xamounty, age 24, of Oroville.
At approximately 6:16 a.m., Cal-Fire swift water technicians located Xamounty submerged in the Feather River. Xamounty was recovered and placed on a BCSO boat, where Search and Rescue personnel and Cal-Fire personnel immediately began lifesaving efforts.
Xamounty was transported to Orchard Hospital in Gridley. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts, he did not survive.
BCSO is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Xamounty’s death. Initial findings indicate that Xamounty was an associate of the citizen who made the 911 call.
The investigation remains ongoing, and an autopsy is scheduled to be performed later this week. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact BCSO at (530) 538-7671.
