U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced the signing of a waiver that amends the definition of food eligible for purchase under Nebraska’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This historic change will take effect on January 1, 2026, and will prohibit the use of SNAP benefits for purchasing soda and energy drinks in the state.
Rollins emphasized that this decision is a significant step toward improving public health, aligning with the “Make America Healthy Again” initiative under President Trump’s leadership. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen echoed this sentiment, stating that taxpayer funds should not support the purchase of non-nutritive beverages. He expressed his gratitude for the collaboration with Rollins and the Trump Administration in implementing this change, which he believes will enhance the health and well-being of Nebraskans.
Previously, SNAP recipients were allowed to purchase a wide variety of food items, with exceptions for alcohol, tobacco, hot foods, and personal care products. The new waiver adds soda and energy drinks to the list of prohibited items, reflecting a broader effort to combat rising health concerns, including the prevalence of prediabetes and other chronic conditions among children and adolescents.
As part of the initiative, Rollins has encouraged states to innovate in addressing health challenges, inviting governors to participate in creating solutions. This waiver is part of a larger strategy to promote healthy eating and lifestyle habits across the country.
