Disgraced former U.S. Representative George Santos was sentenced to over seven years in prison for federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. During the sentencing, he expressed remorse, stating he was “humbled” and recognized that he had betrayed his constituents’ trust. However, U.S. District Court Judge Joanna Seybert questioned the sincerity of his remorse, highlighting that he seemed to deflect responsibility. Santos, who served in Congress for less than a year before being ousted in 2023, admitted to deceiving donors and stealing identities to fund his campaign. As part of a plea deal, he is also required to pay approximately $580,000 in penalties.
